We are a group of students enrolled in a course titled Building Community Through the Arts, a collaborative effort offered through Xavier, Tulane and Dillard universities in New Orleans, LA. We are studying the theory and practice of community-basted arts, civig engagement in higher education, and the relationship between art and community development projects. We are divided into five teams, each working on a specific project in one of four New Orleans locations: the 7th Ward, the 9th Ward, Lakeview and Central City. The fifth group is a team of documentors, each paired with one group, whose main goal is to film, photograph and write about the work each group is doing. The form of each project varies by neighborhood, depending on the needs and goals of community partners. Through HOME, New Orleans?, we seek to celebrate and probe the joys and sorrows of community life pre-Katrina and participate in envisioning and providing creative tools to achieve a better future.
